Private Counseling & Psychotherapy Practice | Certified Sex Therapist

Author | Psychologist | Professor | Speaker

I have been practicing as a licensed psychologist for over 30 years. I have worked with both individuals and couples on a variety of issues, including for example, relationship issues, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, stage-of-life issues, and recovery from childhood abuse.

I am also a certified sex therapist and have a great deal of experience working with individuals and couples on sexual issues.

I am no longer accepting new, ongoing clients. However, I offer a short-term sex therapy package. When working within this short-term model, I use the long-standing PLISSIT model.  This model states that most sexual problems can be solved with permission (i.e., permission from an expert to do what you want to do or what is working for you without shame or guilt, as long as it is consensual and no one is being harmed), limited information (i.e., information on the issue you are grappling with) and specific suggestions (i.e., actionable steps to address your problem). This model states that very few sexual issues need intensive therapy to solve.

Thus, my goal is to help clients resolve sexual issues, without intensive therapy, over the course of one to four sessions. However, if after four sessions, clients and I jointly decide that more time is needed, we may adjust and add up to two additional sessions. In no instance will I go beyond six sessions. If more than six sessions are needed, this is a signal that a client’s sexual concerns cannot be resolved by permission, limited information and suggestions alone and that more intensive therapy is needed.  At that point—or at any other point during the short-term work it seems that intensive therapy is needed—I will always assist clients to find a qualified therapist.

For therapy to be effective, a trusting relationship is essential. Thus, I will be transparent about what I am thinking and why I suggest what I do. I will also encourage clients to voice any questions or concerns about our work or my suggestions. Indeed, whether working with a couple or individual, I view therapy as a joint effort between myself and my client(s). I provide clients with a safe space and expertise gained with training and experience, and my clients provide their expert knowledge of themselves, their experiences, their thoughts, and their feelings.
